Understanding Neurotoxins

Botox and its neurotoxin counterparts serve as trusted, evidence-backed solutions for various aesthetic and medical issues. These neurotoxins originate from the Clostridium botulinum bacteria. While consuming this bacteria can lead to botulism, introducing it to the skin through injection yields advantageous effects on its appearance.

Neurotoxins function by creating a disruption in the dialogue between the muscles and the nervous system. This is achieved by halting the discharge of acetylcholine, leading to localized muscle paralysis. This intentional paralysis enables muscle relaxation, thereby mitigating the visibility of facial wrinkles and fine lines.

Years of application and research have verified the benefits of botulinum toxin. The FDA’s approval serves as an additional stamp of its effectiveness: Botox has been endorsed by the FDA since 1989. Other neurotoxins that have earned the FDA’s approval include Dysport, Myobloc, Rima, and Xeomin.

Forehead and Brow Wrinkles

Neurotoxins are frequently employed to smooth out wrinkles on the forehead and between the eyebrows. These substances temporarily paralyze facial muscles, reducing or preventing the development of frown lines and forehead lines, also referred to as “elevens.”

Crow’s Feet

Effective in treating crow’s feet?fine lines that form around the eyes due to frequent smiling or squinting?neurotoxins offer significant benefits for individuals aged 30 to 50 who are starting to notice these lines.

Lines Around the Nose and Mouth

Neurotoxins can also address lines that form around the nose and mouth due to repeated facial expressions and habits, like laughing, frowning, or smoking.

Neck Lines

For those troubled by horizontal lines and wrinkles on the neck, neurotoxins can be a game-changer. Apart from smoothing and tightening the skin, they also enhance the jawline by relaxing the muscles that pull down on the neck.

w
Migraines

Neurotoxins can provide substantial relief for individuals suffering from frequent migraines. Injecting these substances around the head and neck every 12 weeks can reduce the frequency of migraines and tension headaches.

Bruxism

Individuals suffering from bruxism, a condition characterized by involuntary teeth grinding or clenching leading to jaw disorders, damaged teeth, and tension headaches, can find relief through neurotoxins. Injecting neurotoxins into the chewing muscles helps to relax them, reducing the pain and other symptoms linked with bruxism.

Excessive Sweating

Neurotoxins can also address hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, by blocking the nerves that activate the sweat glands. These injections can be administered in the armpits, forehead, and palms to manage abnormal sweating.

Muscle Spasms

The muscle-relaxing characteristics of neurotoxins make them effective in treating a range of muscular disorders, including eyelid twitching, neck spasms, and strabismus (also known as crossed eyes or “lazy eye”).

What are the risks of neurotoxin injections? + -

Neurotoxin injections have been used for more than 30 years and are generally considered very safe. Common side effects include temporary eyelid drooping, an uneven smile, pain or bruising at the injection site, and eye dryness or excessive tearing.

If you experience muscle weakness, trouble speaking, swallowing or breathing, or vision issues after receiving a neurotoxin treatment, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

What does a neurotoxin injection feel like? + -

Many individuals report that neurotoxin injections feel like a slight pinch due to the use of tiny needles. Any discomfort can be alleviated by applying ice to the treated area post-session.

How do I prepare for a neurotoxin session? + -

Avoid blood thinners, NSAIDs, or muscle relaxants one week prior to your appointment, as these can cause bleeding. Also, avoid alcohol and cigarettes 48 hours before your session to minimize your risk of bruising. Arrive at your session with clean skin.

When should I start getting neurotoxin treatments? + -

There's no universally correct age to start getting neurotoxin treatments. Most of our clients begin in their 30s or 40s when visible wrinkles start to appear. However, some individuals start as early as their 20s for preventative reasons.

How often should I get neurotoxin treatments? + -

Once the effects of the neurotoxin wear off and you notice the wrinkles reappearing, you can schedule another session. However, it is generally advised to space sessions at least 3 months apart.
